There is a running joke in Finland that the reason why they build the Highway 1 from Turku to Helsinki is that so that people can get out of the Turku faster than driving this old highway. And yet it feels like every time you drive from the Turku to somewhere else, it feels like... freedom.
The alignment of the road partly follows the old king's road. In Finland, the section of the road from Turku to Viipuri has traditionally been called the Great Coastal Road or the Lower Viipuri Road. The road is a nationally significant built cultural environment. The section between Turku and Stockholm is called the Great Postal Road.
The Lahnajärvi rest stop was originally opened in 1952. It is Finland's first rest stop built for motorists. It was completed for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
The rest stop was closed in 2008, but was reopened by a new owner in September 2015. The company owned by Pia Landen participated in Jyrki Sukula's TV show 'Kuppilat kuntoon', but went bankrupt in 2018.
A new owner reopened the renovated Lahnajärvi rest stop in the summer of 2020.
