National road 9 begins in the center of Turku and the section of road between Turku ringroad (also known as main road 40) and Lietos asemanseutu is a motorway, and after that, the road continues as a wide-lane road all the way to Aura winding through Loimaa.
After that, the road continues as a regular two-lane highway through Pöytyä, Kyrö, Loimaa, Humppila, Urjala, and Akaa’s Kylmäkoski, reaching the vicinity of Akaa and Valkeakoski, where it joins Highway 3 and continues as a motorway through Lempäälä to Tampere.
After Tampere, it goes throught Jämsä, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Outokumpu, and finally reaches the Niirala border guard station in Tohmajärvi, right next to the Russian border. The length of the road is 663 kilometres (412 mi).
